According to NPD, this is the first time in 10 years that Motorola’s RAZR handset has not been the number one cellular phone on the hearts and minds of American consumers. The shift seems to indicate that U.S. consumers are more interested in more complex devices that offer a wider array of features. A massive advertising campaign certainly hasn’t hurt Apple’s chances, either. Even though overall handset sales have fallen 15 percent since the 2007 Christmas season, Apple still must be happy that when it comes to taste making and trend setting gadget style, they’ve still got it. Eventually – with more than a little help from Steve Jobs – America’s handset choices may truly be full-featured when compared with what customers in Asian countries have enjoyed for years.
